The Tanzania Stop TB Partnership (STP Tanzania) is a project launched in 2021 with the goal of eliminating tuberculosis (TB) in Tanzania by 2025. The project seeks to support the existing National TB and Leprosy Programme (NTLP) by improving coordination, attracting resources and expertise from non-traditional partners, and ultimately making the fight against TB a truly national response.
STP Tanzania leverages a multi-sectoral, collaborative approach that brings together public organizations, development partners, CBOs, NGOs, FBOs, private entities, and affected communities. The project aims to create a strong coalition of partners working towards TB prevention, care, and control, with each partner contributing based on their unique skills and resources.
Here are some key aspects of the project:
Vision: A Tanzania free of TB, with zero deaths, disease, and suffering.
Mission: To contribute to Tanzania’s TB control efforts by coordinating partners, raising awareness, advocating for the cause, and mobilizing resources.
Objectives:
• To mobilize and leverage resources, both locally and internationally, to address funding gaps in TB control.
• To engage all stakeholders in delivering a multi-sectoral TB response in Tanzania.
• To strengthen national and sub-national coordination, collaboration, and accountability among TB partners.
• To raise the TB agenda through advocacy, dialogue, and activism to garner support from political, religious, business, and media sectors.
• To promote equitable access to TB services and participation at all levels.
Implementation Strategy: STP Tanzania uses a project-style approach. Partners choose interventions they wish to implement, develop proposals, secure funding, and execute the project under the STP Tanzania umbrella. This approach fosters collaboration and maximizes impact by leveraging the combined strengths and resources of the partners.
Financing: The project draws on three primary funding sources:
• Contributions from STP Tanzania partners, including NTLP, regional and local authorities, mining companies, and prisons.
• Funds from the private sector, which are secured through targeted resource mobilization strategies focused on addressing TB challenges relevant to potential funding organizations.
• Support from development partners, particularly WHO, the Global Stop TB Partnership, IOM, the Global Fund, USAID, CDC, and PEPFAR.
Risk Management: STP Tanzania recognizes potential challenges, including political will, funding priorities, partner commitment, and public support. The project has developed mitigation strategies to address these risks, including close collaboration with key stakeholders, strategic advocacy and lobbying efforts, promoting transparency and accountability, and publicizing achievements.
Monitoring and Evaluation: A strong monitoring and evaluation system is crucial to ensuring effective project implementation. The Board of Directors oversees the process, with the Executive Secretary responsible for day-to-day monitoring and reporting. The project will conduct both mid-term and end-term evaluations to learn from its implementation and inform future strategic decision-making.
By successfully achieving its objectives and targets, the STP Tanzania project aims to realize its vision of a TB-free Tanzania and contribute significantly to global efforts towards ending TB.
