Our Regions of Work

Dar es Salaam (Arabic for "haven of peace") is a city in eastern Tanzania. It is also the country's richest city and a regionally important economic centre, administrative province within Tanzania, and has a population of 4,364,541 as of the official 2012 census. Though Dar es Salaam lost its official status as capital city to Dodoma in 1974 (a move which was not complete until 1996), it remains the centre of the permanent central government bureaucracy. HDT Headquarters is strategically located in this region for national advocacy.

Kagera region was formally known as the West Lake region. It was renamed Kagera region after the war between Tanzania and Uganda, when Idi Amin attempted to annex the region in 1979. The region takes its name from the Kagera River, which flows from Rwanda through northern Tanzania before it penetrates the waters of Lake Victoria, to emerge as the river Nile, the longest river in the World. Kagera region was the first hard hit by HIV in the country and grossly affected by the influx of refugees, both compromising security and impact of HIV to the communities. HDT initiated interventions in 2007 Ngara district and later spread to Biharamulo. HIV prevention, community based care and support to most vulnerable children have been the interventions carried out by HDT.

Furthermore, HDT has been working in Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Rukwa, Dodoma and Singida since 2011 to strengthen the capacity of health training institutions to become model of excellence. In this consultancy, HDT covers the areas of organization management and development, gender mainstreaming, finance and resource management, monitoring and evaluation.

HDT has also worked in Iringa undertaking studies in/and advocacy against gender based violence, domestic violence, sexual abuse and exploitation.
